Shuttering Vs Formwork

Shuttering is the method of forming the mould using plywood, while formwork, on the other hand, denotes the same phenomena but with the use of a variety of materials.

Both shuttering and framework use to accomplish the same task but the main difference lies in the fact that different materials use for accomplishing the task.

Types of concrete framework construction may depend upon material and type of structural elements.

Among all, timber is the most commonly used material for the framework. However, the big disadvantage associated with a timber frame is that it has a tendency to warp, swell and shrink.

In general practices, irrespective of the material of construction, formwork uses as a collective term (both for wooden and no wooden materials)

Characteristics of good formwork

  • Strong enough to withstand all types of loads.
  •       Should be rigidly constructed and efficiently propped to retain its shape.
  •       Joints should be tight against leakage of cement.
  •           Should be as light as possible
  •       Should rest firmly on the base and should not warp or distort when exposed to the elements.

Shuttering Oil

DANA shuttering oil is packed into drums and is then exported to many countries

Shuttering oil (also called Formwork oil) is a high-quality mineral oil that applies to the inner surface of formwork before concreting. It is also known as form or mould release agent.

It involves the use of a high-quality release agent that is applied to a framework to ensure that the concrete is effectively removed. This process allows easy and painless removal of a framework, preventing damage to both the framework and mould.

Our consistent commitment to quality, here at DANA has ensured that we deal in oil that is well compliant with all the international safety standards and also provides superior results (providing a good surface finish)

Applications of shuttering oil

  • Shuttering oil prevents sticking of formwork to concrete, allowing easy stripping of formwork after hardening of concrete.
  •           Shuttering grease protects steel formwork from corrosion.
  •           Reducing leakage of water during the curing process.
  •           For wooden formworks, shuttering oil prevents water absorption from concrete
  •           It ensures that a superior finishing surface will obtain with minimal defects.
  •           Shuttering oil also protects formwork, so that it can reuse a number of times.

Types of shuttering oil

1)     De-shuttering Oil (DSO)

A water-based mould releasing agent, it gives clean and stain-free high-quality concrete. It sprays directly on required surfaces. One must see to it that excess oil should not apply and if by any chance the thickness of the oil layer exceeds the recommended values, excess oil should drain before it dries.

It offers the following advantages-

  •         DSO is economical to use
  •      Non-toxic and non-hazardous composition
  •         Can use for all types of concrete formworks.
  •         DSO provides even texture and colour of concrete.

          2)     De-shuttering Oil Concentrate (DSOC)

It is dilutable and is used as a mould release agent. Generally, dilution ratio has a value of about 1 part of the volume of water to 5 parts of the volume of de-shuttering oil.

          3)     De-shuttering Oil Emulsions (DSOM)

This does not require any sort of dilution and hence can use instantly. An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids that are normally not mixable.

Selection of type of shuttering-oil

One of the critical factors that govern the performance of shuttering oil is the type of formwork on which it is to use.

For instance, in case of wooden formworks- straight refined, pale, paraffin-based mineral oil and oil phase emulsion can be successfully used. It is important to keep into consideration that the oil must be able to penetrate into wooden structure up to some extent, while also leaving a slightly greasy finish at the surface.

One must also note that while there will be some form release agents that works wonders with wooden formwork, they might not be a proper choice for steel formworks. For steel formwork, the form release agent should not only be free from water but must also contain rust inhibitors.

Hence, shuttering grease should choose on the basis of the type of framework that is to be used for construction.

For getting the best results, it should be made sure that the inside surface is free from impurities.
