Mineral turpentine, commonly referred to as turpentine substitute, turps substitute, or just turps, is a low-cost petroleum-based alternative for vegetable-based turpentine. It’s often used as an organic solvent in various applications and as a paint thinner for diluting oil-based paint and cleaning brushes. White spirit, commonly known as MTO, is used as an extraction solvent, cleaning solvent, degreasing solvent, and solvent in aerosols, paints, wood preservatives, lacquers, varnishes, and asphalt products. White spirit is used in 60% of the world’s paints, lacquers, and varnishes. White spirit is commonly used in households to clean paint brushes after use, clean automotive components and equipment, ignite charcoal grills, remove adhesive residue from non-porous surfaces, and a number of other uses.
Uses
White Spirit is a mild solvent and paint thinner made from petroleum distillate. When coupled with cutting oil, mineral spirits are used in industry to clean and degrease machine tools and components, as well as as a thread cutting and reaming lubricant.

Mineral spirits are frequently used to clean and unclog screens after screen printing with oil-based textile and plastisol inks (also known as silk-screening). They’re also used to thin monoprint inks. Filling liquid-filled compasses and gauges with mineral spirits is common.
Golf clubs are regripped with mineral spirits. Mineral spirits is poured into the new grip once the old grip has been removed and shaken. The new underlying tape and grip are slid on once the mineral spirits have been applied. The new grip and club are ready to use after an hour of drying time.
Although white spirit is sometimes used as a kerosene alternative in portable stoves, it is not advised because to the lower flash point of typical grades of white spirit than kerosene. It cannot be used in place of white gas, which is a far more flammable gasoline-like fuel. White spirits, which may remove varnish and sludge build-up, are a crucial ingredient in Marvel Mystery Oil and other popular car fuel/oil additives. Mineral spirits are extensively used as a cutting fluid in ultra-precision lathes (commonly referred to as diamond turning machines)
